La Jolla means “The Jewel” in Spanish, and is, appropriately, one of San Diego’s most prized communities. Known for its beaches, shopping, dining, and multi-million dollar homes, La Jolla is the best of the Southern California lifestyle. Comprising several communities, including the Village, Mt. Soledad, the Beach & Barber tract, Birdrock, the Muirlands, La Jolla Farms, and the UCSD area, the village or downtown area with its many restaurants, art galleries, and boutiques, and the world famous La Jolla Cove, is the heart of the town.
Bounded by Pacific Beach to the south, the Torrey Pines Nature Preserve to the north, University City to the east, La Jolla’s development is limited by its geography. With only a few planned communities like Crystal Cove, principally on Mt. Soledad, La Jolla mostly offers custom homes. Some original craftsman beach cottages and bungalows that date to the early 1900s still stand, but they are increasingly torn down and replaced by large, luxurious custom homes.
Much of La Jolla’s architecture shows Spanish and Mediterranean influences, as well as the style of the famous architect Irving Gill. La Jolla does offer some new condominium and apartment complexes, including Seahaus, though the majority of the properties are detached single-family homes, many with spectacular ocean views. La Jolla offers a number of private schools as well as a highly rated public school system, and it frequently appears on lists of the best places to live in the U.S.
