Ocean Beach was started as a resort community in 1887. Located north of downtown, the development of Mission Bay and the subsequent rerouting of roads and the opening of I-5 isolated Ocean Beach (known as OB). OB residents enjoy their isolation and maintain their beach community lifestyle. Grassroots organizations prevent the development of strip malls and are devoted to maintaining the chain-store free character of the area.
There is very limited new housing development in the area. Sunset Cliffs and Voltaire, the main streets of OB, are populated by small beach cottages, most dating from before WWII. These craftsman and bungalow homes are situated on small lots and retain much of their original character. There are a few apartment and condominium complexes around Sunset Cliffs, such as Oceanus and Sea Colony, most offering spectacular ocean views and prices more reasonable than those in neighboring Pacific Beach and La Jolla. Dog Beach, a popular attraction for those with and without canine companions, is surrounded by townhomes, most in the mid $500,000s and up.
Ocean Beach is surrounded by hills that stretch to Point Loma. The homes in the hills were built in the 1940s and 1950s on larger lots and offer mature landscaping, ocean breezes, and spectacular views. Prices range from the mid $600,000s to over $1 million.
